Hippodrome – activities in August

The Hippodrome will not have any shows on during August, but the theatre will be opening its doors and hosting a range of activities including live music, theatre tours, craft and drama workshops, opportunities to view archive materials and an exciting ‘Family Trail’. 

Scrap at the Hipp
Yvonne Preston from Scrap Studios will be running a range of activities each week, such as creating silhouettes of characters from our exciting past and using fabrics to create pictures based on the theatre’s history to take away with you. Recommended age 4+.

Launch of Family Trail
The launch of our Family Trail – an interactive tour through the theatre with fun facts and questions to answer. Signor Pepi will be on hand to introduce you to his theatre and he may give you some clues to the questions on the trail! The free Family Trail will be available all day every day – simply pick up a copy from the Box Office.

A Play in A Day with Stef Corbett
Join us to produce a play in a day and treat your friends and family to a unique creative experience. Devise a script based on children’s literature and design a piece of costume, then weave it all together in a performance at the end of the day. Recommended age 7+.

Acoustic August with Les DeVilles
Free laid-back lunchtime music with Les DeVilles. Come along have a bite to eat and a drink in the lovely Hippo Lounge.

A Dance in a Day with Debbie Harbin
Join Debbie for an exciting dance workshop based on the story of Rumpelstiltskin and create a piece to perform for family and friends. Recommended age 6+.

Vintage Brooch Workshop
Join local artist Sarah Oatley to make a unique brooch using vintage fabrics and threads, all materials provided. Take away your own creation.

Open Archive Day
A chance to look at the wide variety of interesting theatre archive material that Darlington Culture Volunteers are cataloguing. An opportunity to talk to theatre staff and volunteers about the history of the Hippodrome.

Acoustic August with Somethin’ Blue
Free lunchtime music. Classic cool sounds played on sax and guitar, with vocals and harmonica. Come along have a bite to eat and a drink in the lovely Hippo Lounge.

History of Theatre with Laurence Sach
A free introductory talk led by Laurence who is a performing-arts lecturer and freelance writer and director and will be leading a 16-week course at the Hippodrome starting in October 2018.
Tuesday 14th • 11am-11.30am • FREE event but ticket required

What’s In The Box?
Meet Signor Pepi (aka our Audience Development Officer Chris Wellings) who will be opening up his suitcase to explore the contents which tell his fascinating story. Interact with Signor Pepi to investigate the fabulous history of the theatre.
